921,766. Pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Aug. 20, 1959 [Aug. 28, 1958], No. 27578/58. Class 144 (2). A tyre bead core wire 1 surmounted by a concentric, radially outwardly-extending rubber or polyurethane apex strip 2 is reinforced by a toroidal winding of steel wire 3 looped around the core assembly section to enclose same, the winding having a radially outwardlytapering cross-section. As shown in Fig. 1, the winding may comprise a series of progressive loops 4a forming adjacent convolutions 4 which enclose the assembly with the wire extending obliquely to the circumferential direction and in opposed directions on opposite sides of the core. Two or more layers of such convolutions may be wound with adjacent layers wound in opposite directions. Alternatively the loops of the winding may extend radially of the core as shown in Fig. 3, or in obliquely-directed parallel-sided fashion as shown in Fig. 5. The windings may be effected by a bobbin rotating around the core section in a plane perpendicular to that of the core; and with the core rotating about its axis. |
