The object of the invention is to provide a novel conveying device for thin workpieces, the conveying device having a simple construction, a long useful life and minimum electrostatic effects on the workpiece and the environment. This object is achieved in that at least one group of contacts (9, 10, 28, 29, 42, 43, 108, 819, 820) is provided, the contacts touching the surface of a conveying element (1, 103, 301, 401, 501, 601) in order to produce regions of varying charge density. The contacts (9, 10, 28, 29, 42, 43, 108, 819, 820) extend over the width of the workpiece (7, 108, 307, 407, 607) and are connected to at least one direct voltage source (13, 14, 109, 110, 204, 205, 504). The invention can be used in printing machines in which the workpieces to be conveyed are held electrostatically.
