The discrepancy between the actual position of the moving saw-blade (15) and the desired one is determined at a point immediately adjacent to the work (3) being cut and above or below it, the blade being then turned to correct it. Where the blade swings to-and-fro, its working plane can be turned until the discrepancy is nil. The blade can work in mountings (11a) on both sides, these being turned simultaneously for correction. One blade end can be released from the mounting when starting the cut, passed through a hole in the work, and then automatically gripped. On finishing the cut it is released and extracted from the mounting to allow removal of the work.
