The invention relates to a method for the preparation of -ergocryptine of high yield and purity which is simplified and industrially applicable. The method includes profound fermentation of a newly formed strain of the species Clavicepts purpurea, registered in the NBIMCC under No. 2444, on complex nutritive media containing carbon and nitrogen sources and mineral salts, with aeration and agitation and subsequent isolation and purification. The strain produces a mixture of alkaloids having constant percent ratio, the -ergocryptine content being 45-50% of all alkaloids, basically in the biomass. The isolation from the mycelium occurs by the extraction method, and purification is direct - by crystallization and recrystalization by selective solvents.
