A method and apparatus for processing telephone calls based on variable telephone call parameters is disclosed. A telecommunication network node is connected to a database which stores a telephone subscriber preference data describing subscriber preference data defining the type of telephone services to be applied to outgoing telephone calls. Upon receipt of the outgoing call at the node, the node performs a database search using variable telephone calls parameters and retrieves a telephone call service description. The telephone call service description describes the type of service to apply to the call. The call is completed with the described services being applied to the call. In another embodiment, the database contains subscriber preference data defining routing instructions for incoming calls. Upon receipt of the incoming call at the node, the node performs a database search using variable telephone call parameters and retrieves routing instructions. The routing instructions indicate whether the call is to be routed to the subscriber or to an alternate destination. The call is completed by routing it according to the retrieved routing instructions.
