The present invention relates to benzothioxanthene dyes of the formula I, (I) in which R1 is SO3(-)M(+) or SO2NR4R5, R2 and R3 independently of one another are hydrogen, SO3(-)M(+) or SO2NR4R5 and X, Y, n, R4, R5 and M(+) are as defined in claim 1, to their preparation and to their use, especially in inks and recording liquids.
