A negative electrode, for a lead accumulator with high cold current output, consists of a grid into which a lead-based active material contg. a lignin-based organic expansion agent is applied by pasting. The novelty is that the expansion agent is homogeneously distributed on the inner surfaces of the formed electrode, after washing free of acid, by application from a soln. or dispersion in water or organic solvent and is adsorbed onto the lead. The expansion agent is pref. oxy-lignin. Prodn. of the negative electrode involves (a) pasting the grid with active material consisting of lead oxides, barium sulphate, carbon black, water and sulphuric acid; (b) forming and washing the electrode free of acid; and (c) dipping the electrode in a soln. or dispersion of a lignin-based organic expansion agent in water or organic solvent. USE/ADVANTAGE - The negative electrode is esp. useful in vehicle starter batteries, and provides high cold start capacity and good cold charging capability.
