The present invention discloses a process to regenerate acid-activated consumed decolorizing clays and smetic catalyst granules including: (1) an extraction step to remove most of the entrained hydrocarbons, such as oil, preferably from about 75 percent to about 95 percent by weight of entrained oil, when decolorizing clays are regenerated; (2) an oxidation step to remove most of the remaining carbon adsorbates which were not removed by the previous extraction step, and carbonize most of the remaining adsorbates, thereby increasing clay adsorption capacity; and, optionally, (3) a rinsing step with acid to restore acidity which is normally associated with fresh, acid-activated decolorizing clays. In a second embodiment of the invention, clay is oxidized with O2 at a temperature below about 360 degree C to carbonize a portion of the hydrocarbons remaining after the extraction step.
