The present invention discloses a process for the preparation of an alkanone and/or an alkanol by oxidizing an alkane and/or alkene having from 3 to 30 carbon atoms with oxygen to form an alkyl hydroperoxide, followed by alkyl hydroperoxide decomposition in the presence of a catalyst having a metal compound immobilized over a vehicle material; during decomposition a separated water phase is present having a pH higher than 8.5, the catalyst metal being selected from the group comprising Mn, Fe, Ni and Cu and the vehicle material being stable in the presence of the separated basic water phase.
