Treatment of wood for use in construction of musical instruments comprises (a) crosslinking the cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin via ester linkages by treating the wood with a di-, tri- or poly-carboxylic acid (or derivative); (b) by removing unreacted acid; and (c) lyophilising the wood.
