The relay has a U-shaped core/yoke and a flat armature (44) cooperating with a coil winding (42) to define a working air-gap and a contact device with at least one contact carrier (25,27) supporting a stationary contact (26,28) and a cooperating movable contact (29) supported by a switch spring (21), acted on by an operating element (3). The pole section (43c) of the yoke arm (43b) lies between the armature and the coil winding, with the switch spring extending beneath the armature and the contacts contained within a contact space (13a) below the yoke arm adjacent the movable armature end (44c).
