Apparatus for catalytic reduction of nitrate and nitrite in water

An assembly which catalytically reduces the nitrate and/or nitrite content of water in the presence of hydrogen consists of: (a) a source for gaseous hydrogen; (b) an assembly which homogeneously introduces the hydrogen into the water; (c) a capillary reactor assembly in which the nitrite/nitrate is subjected to catalytic treatment; (d) a nitrogen discharge outlet at the head of the reactor; and (e) an associated process control assembly. The novelty is that: (A) after the hydrogen inlet and the zone in which the water is enriched with hydrogen bubbles, one or more sections (1) incorporate a directionally-oriented capillary structure, the upper surface of which is made from material which is easily hydrogenated and dehydrogenated; and that (B) means are provided by which this zone (1) can be heated.
