The process has considerably improved reaction time and easeof handling over the known methods in forming optically active(S)- cyanohydrines by an reacting interaction between aldehydesand hydrocyanic acid in the presence of the enzyme S-oxynitrilasein a solvent. The solution of aldehydes and acid is passed througha porous membrane comprising a polymeric resinous binder havingfinely divided filler particles dispersed throught the binder towhich the S-oxynitrilase enzyme is chemically bound.
