The device includes a detection device which is sensitive to infrared (DET,A-E,U2,U3), a memory (EEPROM-U4) and a timing circuit (A,B,U2,BP2). These units are interconnected and coupled to a telephone line (L1,L2). Information is stored for dialling of a programmed telephone number and transmission of a message which is held within the memory. A keypad and the microphone of a telephone handset are connected together to enable this information to be recorded in the memory of the device. In response to the detection of an intruder, the stored telephone number is dialled and the pre-recorded message played.
