The method involves automatically feeding the engine with the fuel, when there is a high power demand, with the greatest energy density. During an acceleration process, the engine is automatically switched to operation with fuel having the higher energy density. The high power demand is derived from the position and/or the position alteration speed of the gas pedal. The engine is fed selectively with petrol or natural gas.
