A ribbon overlap welding system includes two clamps (200,300) for clamping two ribbon ends in overlapping configuration, and for applying a controlled tension to the ribbon ends. A welder mechanism (900) is provided for fusing the ribbon ends. Arm mechanisms (400,500) are provided for repositioning waste ribbon ends, and a cutter (1000) is provided for severing the waste ribbon ends from opposing faces of the welded ribbon loop adjacent to the weld bead.
