ADJUSTABLE FIFTH WHEEL HITCH

An adjustable fifth wheel hitch (10) includes a support frame (12) having base rails (14) that are secured to the frame of a vehicle and a pair of spaced guide rails (16) that bridge between the base rails (14). The fifth wheel hitch (10) also includes a head assembly (28) having a jaw assembly (30) for engaging a kingpin on a trailer. A head support (48) and a pair of uprights (34) mount the head assembly (28) for relative fore-and-aft sliding movement along the guide rails (16) between a towing position and a maneuvering position. A releasable lock (50) secures the head assembly (28) in either selected position. The lock (50) includes a dual bar latch (52) and a leaf spring (70) for biasing the latch (52) into a locking position. The dual bars of the latch are offset or dimensioned so that each bar is selectively received in only one of two similarly offset or dimensioned, cooperating apertures (66) formed in one of the guide rails (16).
