In a fire-extinguishing gas generator for use in restricted spaces (e.g. in an engine or electric motor compartment or electric switch cabinet), the mass and temperature of the inert gas generated are regulated so that, after mixing, an oxygen concentration of less than 16 vol.% is attained in the atmosphere in the space, based on the volume of extinguishing gas at the temperature at which it emerges from the generator.
