<p>Alumina-based abrasive grains with a skin consisting of a mixture of finely dispersed hydrated alumina and sodium silicate are disclosed. A method for making such grains, wherein a gel is prepared by mixing together a sodium silicate solution and a colloidal solution of hydrated alumina in an acidic medium, the abrasive grains are coated with the resulting gel in an amount of 0.1-5 % based on the weight thereof, and the coated grains are dried at 100-500 °C, is also disclosed. Said grains are useful for making abrasive cloths and papers as well as grinding wheels.</p> |
