An input device, such as a mouse having two or more actuators controls, via an implementation device, the input to an electromechanical device such as a microscope which has two or more operating states. One actuator switches the device between states, and at least one of the actuators implements a different function when the mechanism is in a different states. In embodiments of the present invention the mechanism is a microscope system, and the two states are a scan state and a pause state. The scan state allows the microscope system to execute a predefined scan sequence, while the pause state allows the microscope system to pause from that sequence. If a command to mark a specimen is given when the device is in the pause state, the system may switch to an external computer, so that details of the specimen can be recorded.
