Opto electronic measurement system for IC engine combustion analysis

The system involves the cylinders (1) of a standard production line IC engine and has one or more optical sensors (2) at the cylinder periphery or spark plug (9) connected to an electronic evaluation unit (not shown) by a fibre-optic (2'). A continuous or pulsed UV laser source (3) is positioned in the cylinder head gasket (4) or spark plug (9) with its beam (5) directed towards the sensor response cone (6'). It is similarly connected by optic cable (3'). Irradiation of the combustion chamber content by the laser promotes Raman scattering and laser induced fluorescence. From these effects, combustion data are obtained referenced to fuel/air mixture, atomisation, and residual gas content at any point of the IC cycle.
