A burner unit (1), for singeing the surface of a fabric (3) etc., has a combustion chamber (12) opening into the singe slit (2) fed by two adjacent burner slits (11) fed from the gas mixing zone (7) surrounded by the burner body (16), composed of two U-shaped profiled sections (15). The sections (15) are clamped together at their longitudinal edges (19, 20) and position a mixture distribution bar (G). The mixture distribution bar (G) is self-supporting between the body profiled sections (15) over the burner slit (11) zone, to enlarge the burner slits (11) in a wedge shape to their open ends at the combustion chamber side. Preferably the wedge shape at the burner slits is formed by the angled surface of the mixture distribution bar (G) facing the side surfaces of the profiled sections (15). Alternatively it can be through angled housing surfaces opposite parallel side surfaces of the mixture distribution bar (G). The mixture distribution bar (G) is held between the body profiled sections (15) in a zone below the burner slits (11), with the angled lie at the level of the centre of the burner slits (11), and as an extension in equal angles in the side walls (12') of the lower section of the combustion chamber (12).
