In order to determine the biological oxygen demand of sewage, a sample o~ sewage is taken into a reaction vessel (1) in which there is a biological bath ( 2) which i~ kept moving turbulently by an agitator (6). An oxygen probe (8) measures the oxy ger~ consumption per unit time. The biological oxygen demand is determined from th~ dilution ratio behveen the sewage sample taken and the dilution water in the rea ctio~ vessel (1) and from the oxygen consumption per unit time. After each measuring cycle the reaction vessel (1) is rinsed with diluting water and is then ready fo r another measuring cycle. The reaction vessel (1) penetrates into the sewage to be tested . The sewage sample enters the reaction vessel (1) via an aperture (12).
