A machine for welding the ends of rotor winding wires to commutator segments comprises two opposed electrode means spaced apart to receive a commutator therebetween the forces set up during welding, thus being balanced or substantially balanced. A rotary chuck is provided in which the shaft carrying the wound armature and the commutator is clamped and electrode supporting arms are arranged above and below the commutator. Four arms 19, 19A, 20, 20A are pivoted on an eccentric shaft 30 and carry electrodes 36, 38, 39, 37 respectively. Pointed electrodes 36, 37, are provided for welding and non-pointed electrodes 38, 39, for current return. The electrode arms are loaded by compression springs 33 and are mounted on the eccentric shaft 30 for movement in the axial direction thereof and for adjustment by the eccentric so that commutators with odd or even number of segments may be welded. A central shaft 12 belt driven from a motor carries cam discs 17, 18 for advancing and retrading the electrodes once during each revolution of the shaft, cam discs 21 for controlling the supply of welding current and a crank disc 25 coupled via a push-rod 26 to a follower disc 27 on the shaft of the rotary chuck to rotate the chuck through the angle between two segments per revolution. Welding current is supplied simultaneously to the pairs of electrodes. |
