An input shaft (22) of a starter motor (2) drives a crankshaft through an overrunning clutch (5) and a rotary shaft (12) of a generator (1). When an engine is started, the crankshaft drives a driven member (120) of the overrunning clutch (5) through the rotary shaft (12) of the generator (1). A centrifugal member (54) of the overrunning clutch (5) separates the drive member (50) from the driven member (120) when the engine runs at a high speed to prevent wear of the overrunning clutch (5). <IMAGE>
