Explosive charge priming a projectile

The explosive charge (2) is situated inside an envelope (3) with a cover (4) at one end, which is converted into a projectile in the shape of a glove finger by the detonation. The cover has a thickness which reduces from its centre to its periphery, and there is a plate (6) between the cover and the charge to reduce the speed of transmission of the force from the charge's explosion to the periphery of the cover. The plate is made from a material which has a density below or equal to that of the cover, and a Hugoniot pressure limit of at least 0.1 GPa. The total mass of the plate is less than that of the cover. Where the cover is made from tantalum the plate can be of aluminium, iron, steel copper of molybdenum.
