PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bidirectional optical amplifier for a wide band system which can be manufactured efficiently at a moderate cost. SOLUTION: The optical amplifier comprises first and second active waveguides 16, 30 and a pump light source 2 supplying a pumping light to a first coupler 3. A part of the pumping light is transmitted to a second coupler 6 thence transmitted, along with an incoming signal light at a first amplifier connecting part 10, to a second amplifier connecting part 22 through the first active waveguide 16. A part of the pumping light is then fed, along with an incoming signal light at a second amplifier connecting part 22, to another coupler 24 thence transmitted to the first amplifier connecting part 10 through a second active waveguide 30. The waveguides 3, 16, 24, 30 are integrated on a base body 1 where the first and second active waveguides 16, 30 are spiral and the output part thereof is located on the inside of spiral and led out lead out while traversing the spiral. |
