PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition, capable of keeping a nail in a good state, i.e., reducing the hardening of the nail while retaining good cosmetic characteristics when applied to the nail by blending specific carboxylic acids in a specified proportion therein. SOLUTION: This nail treatment composition is obtained by blending at least one of a hydroxycarboxylic acid and/or its salts in an amount within the range of 0.5-3wt.% based on the total amount of the composition. The hydroxycarboxylic acid is preferably anα-hydroxycarboxylic acid, especially 2-8Cα-hydroxycarboxylic acids, among them, preferably glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid and mandelic acid. A vehicle selected from organic solvents, water and oily media can be used as the vehicle of the composition. A film-forming polymer such as nitrocellulose, cellulose acetobutyrate, polyvinyl butyrals or alkyd resins can further be added to the composition.
