PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a denitrating catalyst for internal combustion engine which demonstrates a high denitrating performance even under an excess oxygen condition and is excellent in durability at high temperature, and provide a purifying method for exhaust gas using the catalyst. SOLUTION: An exhaust gas purifying catalyst is obtained by a process wherein gold, zinc, and phosphorus are supported in a specific carrying amount by an alumina support. Further, when nitrogen oxide in exhaust gas is purified by bringing the exhaust gas into contact with the catalyst in an atmosphere containing a reducing constituent containing hydrocarbon and oxygen in excess of stoichiometric quantity required for oxidizing the reducing constituent, the catalyst for purifying exhaust gas is used as a catalyst. |
