PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carboxylic acid amide in a high yield and in a high selectivity by hydrating the corresponding nitrile in the presence of a manganese dioxide catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing the carboxylic acid amide comprises hydrating a nitrile, e.g. anα-cyanohydrin compound of the formula (R<1> , R<2> are each H, a hydrocarbon which may have a substituent; or R<1> , R<2> may form a ring together with the carbon atom, wherein R<1> and R<2> are simultaneously not H), in the presence of a manganese dioxide catalyst having a specific surface area of 150-550m<2> /g, preferably 200-300m<2> /g, at 20-150 deg.C. Water is used in an amount of 0.5-200 moles per mole of the nitrile. A water-soluble organic solvent may be added to the reaction system. The catalyst is prepared e.g. by reacting potassium permanganese with a reducing agent (e.g. manganese sulfate). The production method is greatly useful for producing carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid esters, especially hydroxycarboxylic acid esters and unsaturated carboxylic acid esters, etc.
