摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display device with which a visual field angle comparable to that of a cathode ray tube is realized since the range of the visual field angle in which gradations are uniform is broad and in which a horizontal electric field system capable of improving picture quality is adopted, SOLUTION: In an active matrix type liquid crystal display device having one pair of substrates, liquid crystal layer to be held in between the one pair of substates. active elements formed on the substrate of one side, pixel electrodes SL connected to the active elements and counter electrodes CL formed on either of the one pair of substrates and impressing electric fields almost parallel with the surface of the substrate in between the pixel electrodes SL, the liquid crystal layer has initial orientational directions of liquid crystal molecules of one direction and also has driving directions of the liquid crystal molecules of not less than two directions in the surface of the substrate.
