PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide type optical transmission-reception module having high stability and reliability, low in loss and capable of being easily manufactured at a low cost. SOLUTION: The module employs an optical switch consisting of quartz group glass optical waveguides 2, 3 forming on a silicon substrate 1, directional couplers 4, 5 formed by arranging the optical waveguides 2, 3 close to each other, and a metallic electrode 6 formed on the optical waveguide 3 between the directional couplers 4, 5, and the switch is formed mainly by the quartz group glass optical waveguide circuit with a low loss, high stability and reliability and ease of manufacture. A non-modulation light from a communication opposite party made incident to the quartz group glass optical waveguide 2 is switched to a light receiving element 7 or a reflection mirror 8 by the optical switch, from which the light is sent back while being converted into the strength/weakness of light depending on information to be sent. |
