The machine (1) has a vertical pillar (4), mounted on a wheeled trolley (2). A gantry (5) protruding from the side of the pillar can be raised and lowered, using a crank lever (6). Suspended from the end of the gantry, via a horizontal swivel coupling (7), is a harness assembly. The harness assembly supports a flexible cradle (17) in which the patient (18) is carried. The cradle is attached by strap attachments to horizontal rods (12-14) in three places, one either side of the patient's shoulders and one between the patient's legs. The horizontal rods are linked by a mechanism (11) which allows the patient to be tilted into a sitting position before lowering.
