PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass for an optical amplifier and an optical fiber which does not contain alkali metals or alkaline earth metals. SOLUTION: This optical device is an active optical element in a form of a planer optical waveguide structural body or an optical fiber. This active optical element has a thin and long active glass core 40 which contains oxygen, nonmetal element such as silicon and germanium, and erbium at least a part of which is Er<3+> ion state. The active core contains nonmetal element by 50-90mol%. In the active core, the density of erbium is at least 0.5×10<20> atoms per 1cm<3> . The laser oscillation level of erbium has at least about 5ms emission life. |
