PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium at a lower cost while improv ing the electromagnetic transducing characteristics and durability of a magnetic recording medium with a coating type magnetic layer as a thinner layer. SOLUTION: A lower nonmagnetic layer 4 and an upper magnetic layer 2 consisting essentially of magnetic powder and a binder are formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 by double-layer coating to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium. The thickness of the magnetic layer 2 is >=1μm the nonmagnetic layer 4 is made chiefly of a binder and the interface between the layers 2, 4 is smooth. The top of the substrate 1 is coated with the nonmagnetic layer 4 and the top of the layer 4 is coated with the magnetic layer 2 contg. ferromagnetic powder while the layer 4 is in a wet state.
