The filter includes a shift circuit (16,18) which multiplies the input by 2<-n> where n is a non-negative integer. The least significant n bits are truncated. An inverter module can be inserted before the shift register to produce a digital signal of ones complement and to effectively multiply the signal by -2<-n>. The shift circuit has a number of input wires which correspond to the number of input bits and has one output to an adder (12). Each of the coefficients in the filter transfer function is of the form 2<-n> or -2<-n> and the output is represented by a fixed point.
