A high-resolution position detector for high-flux ionising particle streams, including a gas chamber (2) containing planar electrodes (4, 6, 8) defining conversion (C) and amplification (A) gaps. One of the electrodes has through-holes (18) and acts as the detector cathode (6). The distance between the cathode and the anode (8) of the detector is smaller than 500 mu m. The electrical field strength in the amplification gap is over 10 times greater than the electrical field strength in the conversion gap. Said detector is useful in particle physics, medicine and biology.
