<p>A wheel (10) for a lightweight plastic automobile (100) includes a unitarily-molded outboard plastic rim (12) defining an inboard oriented engagement surface (16) and a unitarily-molded inner plastic rim (14) defining an outboard-oriented engagement surface (18). The engagement surfaces (16, 18) are conformed alike so as to interlock together, and the surfaces (16, 18) are adhesively bonded together to establish a strong, compliant wheel (10). Rivets (44) further connect the rims (12, 14) to prevent the rims (12, 14) from peeling apart. The wheel (10) is mounted on the automobile (100) by a plurality of lug nuts (48), each of which is integrally formed with a washer (54) having a large surface area (16e). The large surface area (16e) of the washer (54) permits firmly tightening the lug nuts (48) while avoiding 'scalloping' of the plastic wheel (10) when the washers (54) are tightly urged against the wheel (10).</p> |
