Laser machining process for metal surfaces

The machining process uses exothermic oxidation of the metal or metal alloy heated by the machining laser, with oxygen supplied to ensure vaporisation of the metal oxide, for removal from the machining point. The laser power or the supplied oxygen is reduced in stages, to prevent the formation of a solid ball of metal oxide at the end of the machining process, or alternatively the laser focus is shifted from the machining plane, so that less oxide is formed.
