In a process for reducing NOx in the oxygen-contg. exhaust gases from internal combustion engines (pref. diesel engines), a gas whose constituents are mainly CO and H2 are used as a reducing agent which is fed into the exhaust pipe upstream of the NOx redn. catalyst. Also claimed is a device for the process which has a burner (6) with an air supply (7) and a fuel supply (8) whose flow rates can be regulated.
