The channel (1), taking the flow (2) in the direction shown, has a rectangular section and is formed in the shape of a "Z". Near the diagonal of this "Z" are fitted two similar photographing and illuminating modules (3, 3'), with cameras (30, 30') mounted in opposite directions next to one another. They are CCD cameras. The modules have illuminating units (32, 32') to give uniform light and other units (31, 31') for direct light, all shining through a glass disc (10). In the lower arm of the "Z" there is a flap (4), with a container (5) below it, for catching extraneous particles, such as pieces of plastic or foil. The flap is rotated by a control, unit (not shown).
