Disclosed is a method for preparing an alpha , beta -unsaturated- beta -trifluoromethyl carboxylate of the formula: <CHEM> wherein X is selected from OR<3>and NR<3>R<4> comprising contacting a compound of the formula: <CHEM> with a base to produce the alpha , beta -unsaturated compound.
