In a process for mfg. a product in a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic material: a) a preform(20) is prepared whose central area(21) consists of a fibrous reinforcing insert in a thermoplastic matrix and whose outer area is formed by a surrounding frame(22) of non-reinforced thermoplastic material; b) the preform is clamped around the outer frame(22) and the central area(21) is formed over a tool(24), the degree of preform extension being matched to the tool shape. Also claimed is a similar process for mfg a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic product based on short and/or random fibres. In this process a preform is prepared which consists of a thermoplastic matrix reinforced with short and/or random fibres and a thermoplastic cover layer on at least one face. The preform is then clamped around the edge and formed on a tool while vacuum or positive pressure is applied on the cover layer side.
