A sewing machine drive comprises several separate drives for driving the relevant components synchronously in respect of rotation speed and/or position. The running of the components in this way is achieved by data-processing control. The ideal values for the speed and/or the position are fed at set intervals to performance-electronic regulating units. The required values are achieved by a comparison of actual and ideal values. If stepped motors are used, the comparison is unnecessary and the need for speed and position regulating devices is eliminated.
