A quick connect coupling (20) having a self-contained releasable collet (64) generally comprising a housing (22) having an axial bore (34) extending inwardly from an entrance. The axial bore (34) includes a large diameter portion (38) adjacent the entrance. A tube (24) having a bead (26) of relatively large diameter is insertable into the bore. A generally annular radially expandable collet (64) disposed within the bore of the housing (22) expands upon insertion of the tube (24) into the housing and contracts onto tube (24) between the bead (26) and the housing (22), thereby retaining the tube (24) within the housing. The tube (24) is selectively releasable from the housing by means of an annular pilot (50) disposed within the housing (22) having an inclined surface (38) complementary to an inclined surface (72) on the collet (64). Release members (76) are provided to facilitate axial inward movement of the collet (64) into the housing (22). The collet (64) then rides up the inclined surface (58) of the pilot (50), thereby radially expanding the collet (64) and releasing the tube (24) from the housing (22).
