The purpose of the claimed process, in a hydraulic brake system suitable for active braking and even where there is no path switch on the low-pressure accumulator (28, 30), is to prevent complete emptying of at least one of the low-pressure accumulators during active braking, without the suction line (8, 10) from the suction-side of the return pump (4, 6) to the brake line (12, 14) being permeable. It is proposed that the current uptake or speed of the drive motor of the return flow pumps (4, 6) should be determined and evaluated. If the pumps are running without load and the low-pressure accumulator is empty, the speed rises and current uptake drops. This signal is used to open an electrically operated switching valve (16, 18) in the appropriate suction line (8 or 10). In addition, an accumulator model can cause the electrically operated switching valve (16, 18) to open just before the low-pressure accumulator is emptied, thus preventing the low-pressure accumulator (28, 30) from emptying completely.
