The device has a movable operating element (3) and a device which detects the movement of the operating element, to which analysis circuitry is connected. The analysis circuitry is used to select information or menu points shown on a display (2) by setting off and by further actuation of a command trigger button. The operating element, preferably a wheel, is mounted to rotate about a single axis. By the analysis circuitry associated with the operating element, through movement of the wheel, the setting off of one information or menu point is switched to the next on the display (2) according to a predetermined sequence. A second actuating element for actuation in the X direction may be provided in addition to the first wheel for actuation in the Y direction. Alternate actuation of the wheels alternately causes movement of an optically switched display in different directions.
