A vehicle headlamp has two reflector regions (14,16), the first sending the light out as a convergent beam to form a dipped beam, and this combines with the light from the second reflector region to form the main beam. Between the reflector and the lens (20) is an imaging screen (30) which can be moved between two positions, one for dipped beam, one for main beam. In the former position, a sharp light/dark boundary is generated. The screen has two parts, one fixed, one moving, each with several holes. In the dipped position, the moving part covers the holes for the fixed part, but in the main position, the holes in both parts are aligned to allow light through.
