The charging method for the sealed nickel-cadmium storage battery of nominal capacity and variable temperature involves (a) first stage charging at an imposed current (11), where Imin ≤ I1 ≤ Imax, with Imin between O and C1, and Imax between 0.2C1 and 5C1, and I1 = alpha C1(1 + aT), where alpha is between 0.2 to 5, and a is between 0 to 0.1, where T is the temperature ( degrees C), aT is a dimensionless product and C1 is the current corresponding to discharge of the nominal capacity in one hour. The method then involves (b) interrupting the first charging stage on fulfilling a termination criterion selected from (i) a voltage (U1, in volts), where Umin ≤ U1 ≤ Umax, with Umin between 1.45 to 1.75, and Umax is between 1.50 to 1.80, and U1 = Ui+bT, where b is between -0.005 to O, and Ui is between 1.45 to 1.75, and (ii) a temperature variation rate (dT/dt) of 0.3 plus or minus 0.2 degrees C/min., with the current (I1) and voltage (U1) being calculated and adjusted during the first charging stage according to the battery temperature change. The method then involves (c) a second stage charging at a voltage (U2, in volts), where Umin ≤ U2 ≤ Umax, with Umin between 1.45 to 1.75, and Umax is between 1.50 to 1.80, and where U2 = Ui + bT, with a current (I2) of maximum 0.21. The duration (t2, in mins.) of this second charging stage being given by the equation: t2 = beta t1 + c, where beta is between 0.2 to 5, and c is between 5 to 60, and where t1 is the duration of the first charging stage, the voltage (U2) being calculated and adjusted during the second charging stage according to battery temperature change.
|
