1,085,384. Fuel elements. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). June 25, 1965 [Aug. 14, 1964], No. 27089/65. Heading G6C. An elongate cylindrical fuel element comprises inner and outer tubes 1, 2 defining an annular space containing a tube or stack of rings 3 of fissile material; the inner tube includes corrugations 9 through which the inner tube is supported by the corrugations contacting a rigid graphite cylindrical member 12. Coolant flows both through the passage between 1 and 12, and along the exterior of the outer tube 2; small corrugations 20 are provided. The large longitudinal corrugations 9 house stiffeners 13 since the casing is preferably very thin stainless steel, e.g. 0À05 mm. thick. The longitudinal and transverse corrugations 10, 11 provide for radial and axial flexibility; the spaces between the fuel column and the canning material are filled with a metal which is plastic at the operating temperature, e.g. magnesium. The can ends are closed by annular rings 5 which carry wires 15 to rigidly secure the cylinder 12 to the canning; these wires can be replaced (Fig. 3, not shown) by a spider.
|
